TY Music Prep Course

About this Course

This course is aimed at all Transition Year students who are presently studying an instrument. Whether they have studied music at Junior Cert level or looking to take up Music for 5th year, this course (available online or in person) will provide support and preparation for the Leaving Cert Music Course.
 

  • Creating a solid foundation in music theory knowledge up to Grade 4

  • Preparing students to study music at Leaving Cert level

  • Reinforcing student's practical skills with theory knowledge

  1.  Rudiments of Music
    Note naming, score reading, & musical symbols (dynamics, articulation, performance marks).
     

  2. Composing Basics
    Keys, structure and form, finishing a given phrase, adding missing notes to a melody.
     

  3. Harmony Basics
    Keys, tonic & dominant, strong beats & weaker beats, finding cadences

    Reading & writing music
    Note Identification
    Melody and Harmony

  1.  Orchestral Scores
    Sections of the orchestra and instruments,
    reading orchestral scores,
    recognizing alternative clefs & transposing.
     

  2. Harmonic Writing
    Triads & chords, rules for writing in good progressions, inverting chords
     

  3.  Aural Skills
    Talking about music, describing the music that is being played, musical language.

  1.  Dictation
    Identifying the notes heard in a dictation exercise for rhythm and pitch

     

  2. Composing using Chords
    Using rules of harmony to create a simple melody, including phrasing.

     

  3.  Harmony - Chord Boxes
    Identifying harmonic versus non-harmonic notes, choosing chords to match a melody.

Do I need to be able to play an instrument?
Yes! By the time you get to 5th and 6th year you will need to be able to play an instrument of a certain level. This is not covered as part of the TY Prep Course.

Do I need to have Junior Cert Music?
No!  This course is designed to start from the very beginning, not as a continuation from Junior Cert.

Do I need to attend in person?
No! Our class is available online or in person. So whether you're 5 minutes or 5 hours away from the school or simply have a busy schedule, you can still sign up for this course! 

Do I need to be able to read music?
No! We start from the very beginning, so that all levels can benefit.
